Evaline Ness «Favorite Fairy Tales Told in Italy»

This is the tenth country that the author, an expert story-teller, has used for Favorite Fairy Tales. Two of the six have a familiar ring—«Cenerentola» is Italian for Cinderella, but with some delightful Mediterranean additions like a magic date tree; and «The Three Goslings» are almost the spit and image of «The Three Little Pigs» «The Story of Bensurdatu» and «The Golden Lion» are romantic tales of rescued princesses; «The Stone in the Cock’s Head» has a down-to-earth humor, and «Bastianelo» is straight nonsense. The stories are simple and straightforward, easy to tell and inviting to read to yourself. Evaline Ness’s woodcuts poke gentle fun at the characters, and it is unfortunate that the color reproduction is somewhat blurred.
