In this 1972 work, Judson Jerome, an outstanding American Poet and writer, and Helga Aichinger, a wonderful illustrator and artist in her own right, has brought to us a short book of poetry for children. Each page of this work offers a short poem of what a child sees during a dream. As with most dreams, their content consists of many things we will never see, some exciting, some mundane. We all understand this and it is fun to contemplate the, i.e. our dreams, and children are no different.

Rooted in Scandinavian and Celtic folklore, the theme of an innocent baby being replaced with a homely, ill-tempered troll or fairy child has intrigued writers for generations. Nobel-laureate Lagerlof drew upon the literature of her native Sweden to create this original story of a woman whose maternal instinct is so strong that she treats the changeling just as she would her own beloved child. Her concern for the troll’s safety finally results in the release of her son. Told in the style of a European folktale, this translation is very readable. However, the length of the text and its sophisticated language make it suitable for middle graders. Bright illustrations in muted tones range in size from one-third page to full-page paintings, each framed on two sides by harmoniously tinted borders. Although the paintings are quite detailed, Winter’s flat, folk-art style featuring plain-faced peasants gives them a look of simplicity. From cover to endpapers to handsomely illustrated text, the overall effect is most pleasing.

“The Owl and the Pussycat” by Edward Lear is a favorite children’s poem of ours and this beautifully illustrated version by Jan Brett is a classic which should be in every home library. Brett’s gorgeous pictures jump off the page and take the reader into the poem. The illustrations are bright and colorful, captivating for children with a Caribbean-inspired theme. We have read books of “The Owl and the Pussycat” by other illustrators, but none holds a candle to Jan Brett.
«Prayer for a Child» is a 1944 book by Rachel Field. Its artwork by Elizabeth Orton Jones won it a Caldecott Medal in 1945. The whole book is narrated by a little girl, but it represents children as a whole. It reflects their love of God, and their gentleness to humankind as a whole. «Prayer for a Child» received positive reviews. Kirkus Reviews described it as «A beautiful piece of bookmaking». The New York Times said «The pictures and the prayer itself speak to a child in a child’s language; older people will find this little volume beautiful, moving and deeply satisfying».
